Lead Material Chemist Job in UK 2025 | Concrete4Change

Are you an ambitious scientist? Concrete4Change (C4C) is looking for a Lead Material Chemist to join their team in Nottingham. This role focuses on advancing chemistry in CO₂-mineralisation technology. As the Lead Chemist, you will guide experimental strategies and support the transition from laboratory research to industrial applications.

Your work will have a direct impact on creating low-carbon concrete and addressing climate challenges. If you’re ready to lead cross-disciplinary teams and innovate in a fast-paced environment, this is the opportunity for you.

About the Hiring Firm

Concrete4Change is a pioneering climate-tech company dedicated to transforming the concrete industry. They focus on patented CO₂-mineralisation technology, which captures carbon dioxide and converts it into concrete materials. By doing so, C4C aims to reduce reliance on traditional cement and lower the carbon footprint of concrete.

The company has successfully scaled its processes and is now commissioning its pilot plant in Nottingham, using real flue gas. With strong backing from major investors and collaborations with top universities, C4C is poised for substantial growth and industrial deployment.

Key Responsibilities

As the Lead Chemist, your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and overseeing experimental programs for CO₂-mineralisation and supplementary cementitious material (SCM) development.
  • Optimizing crystallisation pathways, reaction conditions, and material performance.
  • Enhancing characterisation workflows using techniques such as XRD, XRF, and SEM.
  • Supporting pilot plant validation to ensure lab results translate into industrial designs.
  • Mentoring scientists and fostering a high-performance culture within the team.
  • Implementing structured R&D processes and analytical disciplines.
  • Collaborating with universities and industry partners for innovative solutions.
  • Presenting technical results to leadership and stakeholders effectively.

Job Requirements

To qualify for this role, candidates should have:

  • A PhD in chemistry or materials science.
  • Over 8 years of R&D experience in inorganic chemistry or materials.
  • At least 5 years in a senior role, preferably in a startup environment.
  • Proven skills in experimental design, data analysis, and material optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with analytical tools such as XRD, XRF, and SEM.
  • A strong ability to lead and mentor technical teams.
  • Experience transitioning technology from the lab to pilot scale (TRL 4–7).
  • Excellent communication skills to thrive in fast-paced environments.
  • Desirable Experience may include familiarity with cement chemistry, industrial crystallisation, and environmental regulations.
