POSITION: Mechanical Draughtsman

AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited is seeking an experienced Mechanical Draughtsman to join our Projects department at the Obuasi Gold Mine. If you possess a tertiary qualification in Mechanical or Structural Engineering, hold MINCOM certification, and bring at least five years of relevant experience, this role offers the opportunity to contribute to a modern, mechanized, and long term profitable mining operation.

The Obuasi Gold Mine is currently near completion of its redevelopment phase, transforming into a fully mechanized underground operation designed to produce up to 5,000 tonnes of ore per day.

Your Mission

You will coordinate the design and drafting for all structural, mechanical, and piping scope of works for medium and large projects within the Africa Business Unit Project. Your role also involves advising on construction projects to ensure compliance with OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 implementation principles. Your technical due diligence, governance, and oversight will directly influence project success.

Key Responsibilities

Your role spans design management, quality control, compliance, reporting, and team leadership. Here is what you will tackle:

Governance & Design Management

  • You will provide governance, technical due diligence, and support to capital projects, ensuring full compliance with all relevant AGA standards.
  • Managing all consultants providing structural, mechanical, and piping design services for ABU projects keeps external expertise aligned with our needs.
  • Implementing AGA drawing configuration and numbering standards for all structural, mechanical, and piping packages ensures consistency and traceability.

Documentation & Quality Control

  • You will produce comprehensive project plans and documentation, enabling clear management against defined deliverables and milestones.
  • Implementing and monitoring the design control process from concept through review, issue, and as built for all packages guarantees quality at every stage.
  • Managing design review documentation and updating relevant registers keeps information current and accessible.
  • Conducting evaluations of structural, mechanical, and piping package designs and following up with recommendations drives continuous improvement.

Construction Oversight & Inspection

  • You will oversee and inspect structural, mechanical, and piping construction work to ensure infrastructure adheres to AGA requirements regarding specifications, drawings, and general arrangements.
  • Ensuring installations look professional and function fully reflects our commitment to excellence.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • You will ensure all aspects of commercial, legal, and financial corporate governance align with AGA standards.
  • Establishing reliable processes for managing the technical quality of the Plan of Operations and supporting engineering deliverables builds consistency.
  • Identifying and reporting compliance violations and assisting with investigations protects our integrity.
  • Building team member capacity on compliance related matters including bribery, corruption, ethics, conflicts of interest, and gifts strengthens our culture.
  • Ensuring the project meets its environmental, community, and other obligations as prescribed in AGA policy demonstrates our social responsibility.

Planning, Reporting & Leadership

  • You will provide resourcing and planning support for project execution standards aligned with strategic and business plans.
  • Producing project documentation and progress reports, creating project charters, scope documents, and management of schedules keeps stakeholders informed.
  • Managing project schedules to achieve business needs and operational requirements demands careful coordination.
  • Providing leadership to project team members by defining work, ensuring deadline adherence, and clearly articulating project objectives drives accountability.

What You Bring to the Role

We are looking for a candidate with the right education, experience, and competencies. Here is what you need:

Education & Qualification

  • A tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or an equivalent field from a recognized institution.
  • MINCOM certified (1063 Sectional Engineer).

Experience

  • Five years of proven experience working on capital projects exceeding $10 million.
  • At least five years of relevant experience in engineering design processes and construction protocols.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Basic understanding of Agile project management.
  • Relevant exposure to construction management.
  • Ability to review and qualify payment certificates and manage costs on major projects.
  • Ability to lead the work of test work and engineering design service providers.
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to take a business perspective when managing multiple competing priorities and reconciling them with strategic project priorities.
  • Demonstrated strategic and analytical thinking.
  • Demonstrated capacity to make sound short term tactical decisions by quickly assembling and interpreting data.
  • Commercial acumen relevant to the role.
  • Demonstrated capability in organizing work, setting priorities, and exercising sound independent judgment.
  • Strong ability to lead and work effectively with people, including leading high performing professional teams.
  • Demonstrated capability and willingness to explore and embrace different cultures.
  • High energy and enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals for self and team.
  • Preparedness to take a well reasoned stand on matters of importance.
  • Preparedness to undertake extensive business travel.
  • Strong track record of success at managerial level in the resources industry.
  • Strong track record in business improvement and change management.

Location: This position is based at the Obuasi Gold Mine, Ghana.

Employment Status

This is a fixed term contract position.
