Study in UK | British & Scotland Unite Foundation Scholarships 2026/2027

Most scholarships hand you a cheque and wish you luck. This one hands you keys to your own room and pays every bill for up to three years. The Unite Foundation Scholarship Scheme for 2026-27 is accepting applications right now. If you are a care leaver, care experienced, or estranged student heading to a UK university, this award could eliminate the single biggest financial stress of your degree: accommodation.

Established in 2012 and backed by Unite Students, the Foundation has already supported 883 young people, with 452 graduates to date. This year, 70 new scholarship places are up for grabs across 22 partner universities in England, Scotland, and Wales. Competition remains fierce. Last cycle saw 406 eligible applications for those 70 spots. Understanding exactly what is on offer, who qualifies, and how to apply is worth every minute of your time.

The Financial Package: What You Receive

The Unite Foundation Scholarship is not a tuition discount or a partial bursary. It is a full accommodation package designed to remove housing costs entirely from your university budget.

  • Private Ensuite Room: You receive a private ensuite bedroom in a purpose built student halls property at zero cost. No rent, no utility bills, no Wi Fi charges appear on your doorstep.
  • Year Round Coverage: The accommodation runs 365 days a year, not just term time. You never scramble for holiday housing during breaks.
  • No Deposit or Guarantor: The scholarship waives the deposit requirement and eliminates the need for a rent guarantor. This removes two barriers that block many care leavers and estranged students from securing housing at all.
  • Three Years of Support: The accommodation lasts for up to three years of eligible undergraduate study. Those years do not need to be consecutive, giving you flexibility if your academic journey takes unexpected turns.
  • Full Service Living: Tenancy contracts include maintenance support, on site teams, an emergency call centre, and common facilities like laundry and bike storage. You live in a supportive community, not just a room.
  • Placement Flexibility: If you land a work placement or holiday job in a different city, you can apply for free housing in an alternative Unite Students property near your employer, subject to availability.
  • Upgrade Option: Room upgrades may become available, though these would require a personal contribution from you.

In practical terms, this scholarship can save you tens of thousands of pounds across your degree. Money that would otherwise vanish into rent, deposits, and bills stays in your pocket.

Eligibility: Who Qualifies

The Unite Foundation targets a specific group of students who face university without the family safety net most people take for granted. Also, you must fall into one of three categories and meet every additional criterion below.

  • Care Experienced in Scotland: You are aged 16 or over and were looked after by a Local Authority at any point in your life. Evidence from SAAS or your Local Authority confirms this status.
  • Care Leaver in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland: You hold statutory care leaver status, whether Relevant, Former Relevant, Eligible, or Qualifying. Your Local Authority confirms this, or your student finance award shows care leaver funding.
  • Estranged Student: You are estranged from both biological parents, both adoptive parents, or your only living parent. Student Finance or SAAS has assessed you as an independent student on the basis of irreconcilable parental estrangement.
  • Age Limit: You must be aged 25 or under on 1 September 2026.
  • First Degree Only: You must be on your first and only undergraduate degree. No second degrees and no second attempts qualify.
  • No Foundation Year: You must not be undertaking a foundation year or master’s level study in the 2026-27 academic year.
  • Partner University: You must hold a firm offer from, or already attend, one of the 22 Unite Foundation partner universities. You must study at the partner campus specifically.
  • Fee Status: You must have UK home fee status. International students are not eligible for this award.
  • Student Finance: You must receive or apply for Student Finance or SAAS tuition and maintenance loans that confirm your care leaver, care experienced, or estranged status for your entire course.

The 22 partner universities are spread across the UK, including Aston University, King’s College London, the University of Edinburgh, and Glasgow Caledonian University, offering a wide choice of study locations.
