The mineral is a contributing factor to a sustainable economy. This is because the demand for copper comes from various industries. The production of electric cars, electricity and communications grids all demand the use of copper. It is also a highly recyclable metal.
Worldwide, a total of 20 million metric tonnes of copper is extracted yearly. Here are some of the biggest copper mines in the world.

BIGGEST COPPER MINES IN THE WORLD

Some of the world’s largest producers of copper include Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Indonesia.

1. Firstly, Escondida, Chile

Escondida, Chile

The Escondida copper mine is the world’s largest copper mine by reserve. It can be found in the desert of the Atacama in Northern Chile. The mine is owned by BHP Group place and produces 7% of the world’s copper. The mine is an important component of the Chilean economy because it contributes the greatest percentage of the country’s GDP.

The Collahuasi mine is the world’s second-largest copper mine. It is a surface mine that is situated in Tarapaca, Chile. In 1880, this open pit mine was officially opened however,  due to geopolitical reasons, operations were put on hold between the period 1930 to 1978.

Operations started again because there was a discovery of a new deposit. The mine is owned by Anglo American plc/Glencore plc and produces 610,000 tonnes which translates to 3.1% of the world’s production. It also has a mining reserve of 3.19 billion ore.

3. Thirdly, Buenavista del Cobre

The Buenavista del Cobre was formerly known as the Mexicana de Cananea S.A de C.V. It is a Mexican mining company and a subsidiary of Grupo México since 1990. Buenavista is an open pit mine and is known to be the oldest continuously operated mine in the North American continent.

The mine has been in operation since 1899. The mine is owned by Southern Copper Corporation and produces 525,000 tonnes of copper in a year. Their contribution to global production is 2.6%.

4. Another is Morenci

The Morenci mine can be found in Arizona, USA. The mine has a reserve of about 3.2 billion tonnes of copper. This open pit mine has been in operation since 1872 when it started operation as Detroit Copper Company. It later changed to Phelps Dodge in 1917 until it was bought by Freeport-McMoRan in 2007. Every year, the mine produces 520,000 tonnes of copper.

5. Lastly, Cerro Verde II

This is a very large copper mine situated in the city of Arequipa in southern Peru. The mine has been in operation since the 1800s. The company is owned by Freeport-McMoRan Inc. The mine produces 500,000.
