5 Fastest growing cities in Africa 2021

As the population of Africa has increased over the years, so is the growth of certain cities on the continent. Cities with high levels of industrialization, urbanization, and economic activities experience immigration and a fast-growing rate.

In this article, we take a look at five counties that are rapidly growing in Africa. This coalition is per the calculations from last year.

1 . Firstly, ACCRA – GHANA

Accra is the capital, administrative and economic city of Ghana. It is the home of significant government and non-governmental ministries. It houses insurance firms, the head offices of banks, and the big markets which import most of their food supply.

The city is near the Tema Port, a central cross-country border for Ghanian international trade. With a growth rate of 49%, thus, the population of Accra is expected to increase to 3.6M from a population of 2.6M.

2 . Secondly, IBADAN – NIGERIA

Ibadan is the largest city in Nigeria by landmass and the third most populated city. There are many economic activities in Ibadan in every street and suburb. It is situated relatively close to the commercial hub Lagos within 130 km. This makes the city particularly attractive for entrepreneurs.

The commercial activities in Ibadan are agriculture, trade, handicrafts, as well as manufacturing. As of 2021, the total population in Ibadan is approximately 3.7M people. Also, the city is anticipated to grow by 49% to a projected population of 4M in 2025.

3 . Thirdly, LAGOS – NIGERIA

Lagos is located around the Western Coast of Nigeria. It is the largest city in Nigeria in terms of population. Also, Lagos is the administrative seat for most financial and business centers working in and across Nigeria. It houses the largest seaport in Nigeria, a significant site for international trade.

The city has skyscrapers that serve as up-market apartments as well as businesses. LAGOS is also known as “The city that won’t stop growing”. Their population is expected to rise by 49.5% in 2025, from a total of 18M in 2005 to 27M in 2025. Every day, thousands of people move to the city. Many of them are from rural areas, in search of greener pastures.

4 . Also, DAKAR – SENEGAL

Dakar is the government and capital seat of Senegal. It is home to one of the best seaports in West Africa. It sees many trades between West Africa and Europe. The city houses many historical African museums. The basic economic activities are petroleum refining, truck assembly, fish canning, flour milling, brewing, as well as peanut oil refining.

5 . Last but not least, ABIDJAN – CÔTÉ D’IVOIRE

Abidjan is located along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean bordering Côte d’Ivoire. Also, the city houses many administrative and business sectors of the country. Scientific research institutes and museums of Ivorian arts attract diverse tourists to the site. Hence, the city is multiplying, and the population is expected to pass 6 million in the next ten years.
