Africa is home to over a thousand tertiary institutions some of which are ranked as the best on the continent. These universities stand ate known to be the creme de la creme.
Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings are based on the following indicators; research conducted by the universities and the impact it has in terms of development, innovation, as well as international outlook.
The rankings span across different countries on the continent like South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, and other countries.

1 . Firstly, the UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN (UCT)
This is a South African public university that was established in 1829 and it is one of the oldest universities in Africa. It ranks number 1 in Africa and the 200th in the QS global ranking.
UCT is an inclusive university that inspires creativity by achieving outstanding academic records and also enhancing the lives of its students and staff. The university has 57 departments and 6 faculties, 1208 academic staff, and 3,179 non-academic staff. It also offers various degrees including a master’s degree, doctorate degrees, and others. UCT has a high number of international students gaining admission to pursue various courses.

2 . Secondly, the UNIVERSITY OF WITWATERSRAND
The University is located in the northern areas of central Johannesburg and has many campuses. It is a public university for research and offers undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses.
The Wits University has published some research findings in the areas of natural science, medical and health science, social science, humanities, and engineering.

3 . Thirdly, STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY
This is a public research university that is situated in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Stellenbosch University is the oldest in Africa and has been recognized for its academic achievement continuously.
The University offers an undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in various fields of study such as Law, Medicine, Surgery, etc. Stellenbosch University has up to 150 departments, shared between 10 faculties.

The University came into existence in 2004 due to a merger between the University of Durban-Westville and the University of Natal. It is a public university with four colleges and offers both undergraduate as well as postgraduate degrees.

5 . Lastly, CAIRO UNIVERSITY
The school was founded in 1908 and can be found in the capital city of Cairo. The school has twenty faculties and 3 institutions. The University’s school of medicine is one of the first medical schools to have existed on the continent.
