4 conflict hotspots in Africa and how their economies have been affected

Across the continent, there are many conflicts underway. Be it an insurgency, agitations for resource control, militancy, outright terrorism, or full-blown wars. Many groups sought arms to antagonize different African states. And these states respond to the antagonism with brute force.

This has led to conflicts that are slowly getting out of control. In this article, we will look at the four conflict hotspots in Africa.

1 . Firstly, ETHIOPIA

Number one on the list is The Ethiopian Conflict. Ethiopia is Africa’s second-most populous country besides Nigeria. There has been quite a number of active conflicts and secluded killings across Ethiopia since 2017.

Currently, it is almost impossible to keep count of the number of deaths. The conflicts seemed to have intensified in 2021. This followed a military offensive against the Tigray Region by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government.

As you may know, the conflict between the Ethiopian government and Tigrayan forces began after the ruling party requested the country’s election board to cancel an already scheduled 2020 general election.

This was in view of the health risks posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The request was forcefully opposed by the Tigrayans, who went ahead to organize elections for their region. The Ethiopian government perceiving this as secessionist chose to exercise absolute powers to maintain the territorial integrity of the country.

Since November 2020 till now, both the military and Tigrayan forces have fought actively. And just last month, there were invasion threats on the capital city of Addis Ababa. Ethiopia is a very important country in Africa. The headquarters of the Africa Union is located there, it will be important to resolve the conflict before it gets out of hand.

2 . Secondly, CAMEROON

The ongoing civil war in Cameroon doesn’t get a lot of media reportage, a reason for only a few knowing about it. The truth remains that Southern Cameroon has been in turmoil for many months now. There have been allegations of genocide, rape, and other atrocities. This is a result of the government forces’ continuous battle against separatists in the Anglophone territories of Ambazonia.

In 2021, the biggest challenge was kidnappings. Both the terrorists and bandits have been blamed as responsible for the trend.

Unfortunately, everyone has had a fair share of this brutality. Meanwhile, in the Eastern part of the country, secessionists have burnt police stations and election offices as part of their agitation.

4 . Last but not least, THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO (DRC)

For some years now, the DRC has hardly experienced any peace. It has been one conflict or the other. This has been since the first and second civil wars were fought between 1996 and 2003. Thus, the conflicts are being fueled by agitations for political control and natural resources.
