1 Million UK Residents Still to Transition to e-Visas as Year-End Deadline Looms

The UK plans to phase out physical residence permits, making e-Visas the only proof of residency starting January 2025. With the December 31 deadline looming, around 1 million residents still need to register. This article explores the transition, its challenges, and how to ensure compliance.

Starting January 1, physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) will no longer validate the right to live and work in the UK. This shift, part of the government’s e-Visa program, aims to modernize residency verification but has encountered several challenges.

What is the e-Visa Program?

The UK e-Visa program is a digital system designed to verify residency rights. Introduced by the previous government, it applies to all non-citizens and non-British passport holders living in the UK. The program replaces physical documentation with a fully digital system, making the UK the first country to eliminate physical entry visas and residence permits.

While the official deadline for registration is December 31, the Home Office has announced a grace period until March 2025 for travelers using BRPs to re-enter the UK.

1 Million Yet to Apply for e-Visas

Of the estimated 4 million BRP holders required to switch to e-Visas, only 3.1 million have completed the process, according to Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. This leaves about 1 million individuals unregistered as the deadline approaches.

Migration and Citizenship Minister Seema Malhotra acknowledged the ongoing rollout issues, including incorrect e-Visa status displays. She emphasized the government’s commitment to resolving these problems promptly.

Concerns and Challenges

The e-Visa system has faced criticism due to several implementation hurdles:

  • Travel Complications: Concerns about e-Visa functionality during international travel persist.
  • Benefit Disruptions: Reports indicate that benefits have been wrongly terminated due to status visibility errors.
  • Public Awareness: Many affected residents lack awareness about the transition process.

To assist applicants with technical issues, the government has established a resolution center and an e-Visa error unit. Additionally, late applications will be accepted for those who miss the December deadline.

Government Response

In response to the ongoing challenges, the government has implemented several key measures:

  • Grace Period Extension: A grace period has been extended until March 2024 for individuals using physical residence permits to re-enter the UK.
  • Resolution Center: A dedicated resolution center addresses e-Visa-related problems.
  • Late Applications: The government will permit late applications for e-Visas beyond the December 31 deadline.

Steps for Affected Residents

To ensure a smooth transition, eligible individuals should take the following steps:

  • Register Online: Visit the official Home Office e-Visa portal to apply.
  • Verify Status: Double-check e-Visa details once issued to avoid discrepancies.
  • Seek Assistance: Contact the resolution center for technical or application issues.

Looking Ahead

As the UK embraces digital residency verification, the government faces increasing pressure to address ongoing issues. The transition to e-Visas marks a significant change in immigration policy. However, for many residents, the road to compliance remains challenging. Staying informed and proactive is essential for a successful transition.
